Barleylands and Jimmy's Farm Venture
12 July 2010

Barleylands Farm Park Manager Jimmy Allan and Jimmy Doherty of Jimmy’s Farm have formed an alliance to enable Barleylands to have a sow and her piglets for visitors to see and for children to learn about all year round.

The team at Barleylands will be looking after the precious sow, who has been named Jemima, and her litter of eleven black and pink piglets over the next 6 weeks of their suckling period which means that visitors to the Farm Park get to see the cute Essex piglets feeding from their Mum. The piglets were born on the 12th June and are part of The Essex Pig Companies successful reintroduction of the breed. Essex pigs were considered to be extinct as recently as 1997, however careful breeding from a small purebred herd have allowed this good natured and easy to keep breed to be brought back from the brink.

Jimmy Doherty said; “We are very happy to be working with Barleylands, it is such a great place to visit and we all share the same ethos that educating children about food and farming is extremely important and having pigs and piglets will really enhance that experience”.

Piggy playtime ;where visitors can help feed and watch the pigs enjoying a shower, whilst learning all about them, is now a popular fixture on the list of daily activities at Barleylands, along with Farm animal feeding, tractor rides and much more!
