HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh’s visit to Barleylands: Celebrating 40 years of educating School Children in Essex and East London
On Monday 12th May 2025, Barleylands had the privilege of welcoming HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh to Barleylands to help celebrate 40 years of educating School Children in Essex and East London.
Her Royal Highness visited our Kitchen Classrooms, where she was greeted by School Children from St Cedd’s (Chelmsford) and Manor Primary School (Dagenham). The Duchess kneaded dough and joined in the pizza making with St Cedd’s who were visiting for a ‘Field to Fork’ day. Manor Primary School were visiting for a ‘Cow to Cone’ day and made homemade ice cream which they enjoyed after their lunch. As farmers, we are aware of the disconnect between how our food is grown and how it gets to our plates. The Barleylands Education Programme is an outdoor classroom and a resource for visiting schools telling the field to fork story through visits which give children the opportunity to cook from scratch.
Her Royal Highness also took part in a Bird of Prey experience and flew one of our wonderful Barn Owls.
