Farming Discovery Barn

Barleylands Farm Museum and Educational Centre

The Philpot family have been farming in Essex for over eighty years and the Discovery Barn tells the story of farming and rural life both now and in the past.  It’s a brilliant place for children and families to discover more about the Essex countryside and how we used to live.

We have an enticing selection of vintage machinery, tractors, carts and all sorts of other farming equipment. Our displays are interactive and there’s always something to see. We welcome many schools who come along for a whole day of immersive activities, so don’t forget to tell your teacher about everything you did and learned – and you might get to come back with your whole class.

We also tell the tale and share the journey of food from field to fork, which we believe is a vital element of learning for everyone. Good diet, proper nutrition and learning the skills to prepare fresh food from scratch, all to help us all understand where the food on our plates comes from and how it got there.

The importance of agriculture and farming to this part of Essex, here in Billericay, and beyond, is something we celebrate here at Barleylands and we hope you find it’s a really special part of your day out at the farm.
